A Technology Epicenter with Exponential Growth

The Triangle is the second-fastest growing tech hub in the US. In 1965, IBM made the move to the Research Triangle Park paving the way for the region to become an epicenter of technology. 50 years later, Apple announced that it would open a 1m square foot campus at RTP with 3,000 employees.

Our 4,000 tech companies employ more than 60,000 in software development, information security, and everything in between. Tech companies in the Triangle are innovators in interactive software/games (ever heard of  Epic Games? They’re headquartered in Cary, NC), software development, open source, hardware manufacturing, defense technology, telecommunications, and nanotechnology.

Propelling the World Forward

With industry leaders like SAS and Allscripts calling the Triangle home, there’s no doubt that the Triangle is at the forefront of the software industry.

The region is a hotbed of technical talent and that pool continues to grow dramatically, attracting companies specializing in mobile applications, healthcare IT, cloud computing, and cyber security. Our area higher ed programs ensure that there is constant replenishment of the labor pool with an impressive supply of smart and motivated professionals.

Game on!

The Triangle is already home to more than 40 companies developing, publishing, or providing technology or services to the video game industry, including industry leaders Epic Games and Red Storm Entertainment. Our existing industry presence, strong university and community college programs, and recently enhanced state incentive programs position the Triangle to build on its position as the East Coast hub for this sector. The Triangle even has its own gaming conference: East Coast Gaming Conference, presented by Triangle Game Initiative.

Removing Barriers to Innovation

If you’ve ever been to Downtown Raleigh, you’ve undoubtedly seen the Red Hat logo emblazoned atop their headquarters (and maybe visited the Red Hat Amphitheater for a concert.) The presence of this global leader in open source software solidifies the region as a center of innovation in this field and has generated significant interest from other open source companies. Other industry leaders include Citrix and Oracle.

Improving Critical Military and Homeland Security Initiatives

With both the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and the United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) located at nearby Fort Bragg, there’s no wonder the Triangle is home to over 50 companies in the defense technologies industry. With six major military bases and the third largest active duty military population (with over 19,000 military personnel re-entering the workforce each year), the Triangle is the ideal location for defense contractors.
